Preview Review/Thoughts
I'm sitting here waiting for my copy to come in the mail. It's out for delivery right now. I just finished the seven chapter preview can't wait to get my hands on the full novel.
I am a huge Brandon Sanderson fan. I recently reread The Alloy of Law and loved it even more than I remembered the first time around. This seven chapter preview of Shadows of Self, the second book following the adventures of Wax, Wayne, and Marasi, has set up a book that will likely outshine its predecessor.
What I've enjoyed about these seven chapters is that they've delved more deeply into all three of the main characters. Wax was interesting and likable in the first novel, but now we get to hear some of his history. We get to see what life was like for him before he became a legendary lawman. So far I've been very intrigued.
There are more connections to the previous trilogy in this one, with even more mentions of the old characters and events than in the previous installment. And I love the changing society, religious questions, technological advances, mixed up magic, and western feel of this world.
There has also been an appearance by Hoid, leaving me with even more questions about the Cosmere. I really hope we get to see more of him in this novel. Particularly if we get some Hoid/Wayne interaction. Those two could be very entertaining together.
This is a great start to the novel and I am really excited to get my hands on the full novel today. Be sure to check back for a review of the entire novel in the next few days.
